Mustangs Win Opener At State Softball Tournament

Kierra Jungers threw a two-hit shutout and the Newell-Fonda offense manufactured a pair of runs in their 2-0 win over North Butler in the quarter-final round of the class 1A state softball tournament in Fort Dodge on Monday.

Jungers struck out nine and walked three in her third straight shutout.  In the four post-season wins this year the freshman has thrown 23 innings and has allowed only one run on 13 hits while striking out 31 batters.

In Monday's game the Mustangs plated one run in the first inning when Macy Sievers drove in Bailey Sievers from third base on a ground ball hit to the third baseman.  Then in the 4th inning, Mary Walker scored on an RBI sacrifice bunt my McKenna Sievers.

Newell-Fonda, now 36-4, will play Southeast Warren Wednesday morning at 11am in the semi-final round, the game will be broadcast on 92.9FM KKIA.
