July 17, 2021 11:51pm

The Newell Fonda baseball team claimed a district title for the 3rd consective year with a 7-2 win over Bishop Garrigan on Saturday night in Fonda.

The Mustangs threatended in the bottom of the 1st, as they loaded the bases with nobody out, but had to settle for one run on Mason Dicks sacrifice fly.  Bishop Garrigan tied it with a run in the 2nd, but Newell Fonda regained the lead in the bottom half as Beau Wilken scored on a throwing error.

The Golden Bears tied the score in the 3rd, and it stayed that way until the 5th.  After the first two Mustang batters were set down, Dicks singled and then scored on an RBI triple by Ryan Greenfield.  Two more runs scored that inning on wild pitches.

Gabe Sievers capped the scoring with a two-out, two-RBI single with the bases loaded in the 6th.

Tanner Gerke took to the hill as the 3rd Mustangs pitcher of the game in the 5th, and allowed two hits in three innings of work with four strikeouts.  Postgame comments from Gerke, Greenfield, and coach Bo Darrow can be heard below.

While Bishop Garrigan finishes at 16-14, Newell Fonda's 5th win in the row, and 14th in the last 15, puts them at 21-6.  The Mustangs play Remsen St. Mary's this coming Tuesday, July 20th at 7pm, in a substate final rematch from a season ago.  The game will be broadcast on 92.9FM KKIA.  Remsen St. Mary's won their district final 6-0 over LeMars Gehlen.
