Mustangs Pound Panthers--Advance To Semi's

The two-time defending state champion Newell-Fonda girls basketball team put the remaining 1A teams on alert with an impressive 88-47 win over Kingsley-Pierson in a 1A quarter-final game at the state tournament in Des Moines Wednesday evening.  The Mustangs led 60-24 at the half and blew the game wide open with a 22-0 run in the 2nd quarter.

Ella Larsen led the way with 19 points on 7-for-8 shooting and led the team with eight rebounds and had five steals. Macy Sievers had 15 points, six rebounds and six steals, while Bailey Sievers and Mary Walker each scored 13.

Newell-Fonda shot 57-percent for the game and made 10-of-24 shots from the arc and eight different players made a 3-pointer.

The Mustang defense forced 26 turnovers including 21 in the first half.

Kingsley-Pierson was led by Delaney Iseminger's 17 points as the Panthers finish the year with a record of 23-2.

Newell-Fonda, now 24-1, will play Montezuma Friday at 4pm in the semi-final round.

Other 1A first round scores, Montezuma beat Saint Ansgar 50-45, Bishop Garrigan scored a 48-42 win over Springville, and Exira-EHK beat MMC-RU 60-55.
