Alta Aurelia PERL Levy Fails to Pass by Small Margin

March 02, 2021 9:46pm

Voters struck down a PERL Levy for the Alta Aurelia School District by a narrow margin today (Tues), according to unofficial results.

There were a total of 282 votes...177 in Buena Vista County, and 105 in Cherokee County. 143 voted against the levy (51-percent)...and 139 voted in favor of the levy (49-percent).

The levy received 43-percent support in Buena Vista County, and 63-percent voted yes in Cherokee County.

The “Public Education and Recreation Levy” would have generated approximately 70-thousand dollars per year, beginning next school year, to support new playground equipment, before and after school programming, summer school programming, and community education programs.

The PERL Levy could be up for election again in six months.  Alta Aurelia Superintendent Bill Walters says the district will look at the election data and see how to proceed. He says the good news is they can use the information from this election to form a strategy.  Walters says PERL is a new concept to this area, and they will continue to educate stakeholders on the future needs of the district and move forward.

31 school districts in Iowa currently levy for PERL.
