February 19, 2021 9:47pm

Rock Valley finished on a 9-2 run over the final two minutes in their 56-46 win over Pocahontas Area Friday in a 2A girls basketball region semifinal in Sioux Rapids.

The game featured seven lead changes and eight ties.  The Indians led twice earl on, but Rock Valley held a 14-10 advantage after the 1st quarter.  Poky held a brief one-point lead during the 2nd quarter, but the Rockets took a 27-26 lead into halftime.

Poky took what proved to be their final lead on an Akaysa Duitscher three-pointer with three minutes to go in the 3rd quarter.  After that though, Rock Valley went on a 6-0 run into the 4th quarter.  A layup by Jenna Vonnahme pulled the Indians within 41-39, but that's as close as they got the rest of the way.

Rock Valley gained a 47-41 lead, and then Abby Oberhelman connected on a three to make it 47-44 with just over two minutes left, before Rock Valley's strong finishing kick, which included nine straight points, wrapped it up.

Poky had two players foul out, and Rock Valley was plus-23 in free-throw attempts, going 18-28, compared to the Indians 4-5.

Poky was led by Duitscher's 17 points, and Oberhelman had 14.  Those two combined to hit all six of Poky's threes.

Abby Heemstra led Rock Valley with 23, as they improve to 15-9, and will play Emmetsburg in a region final next Wednesday night.

Pocahontas Area finishes at 13-9.  Ellie Melohn is the only Indians senior.
