2nd Ranked Mustangs Advance To Regional Final

February 19, 2021 8:50pm

The Newell-Fonda girls basketball team took another step toward the state tournament with a solid 78-36 win over Audubon in a 1A regional semi-final game played Friday night at Newell.

The visiting Wheelers got off to a great start and led 9-4 after the first four minutes but the Mustangs battled back and led 18-11 at the end of the first quarter.  The Mustangs then dominated the next two quarters of play outscoring Audubon 49-18 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters to blow the game open.

The usual formula for the Mustangs vaulted them into another regional final, lots of depth, pressure defense, and constant hustle propelled them to their 22nd win of the year.  Newell-Fonda will now play CAM next Wednesday in a regional final that will be played at Greene County high school in Jefferson.

The Mustangs were led last night by Macy Sievers' 17 points, Bailey Sievers added 13, and Ella Larsen and Ellie Lago each scored nine.  The Mustangs connected on 12 3-point shot attempts and had ten different players score.

After the ball game coach Dick Jungers said this, "We got off to a slower start tonight as we trailed a solid Audubon team 9-4 at one time, however the girls settled in and started making plays on defense and we were able to convert those into some scoring opportunities.  I was pleased with our ball movement that led to open looks.  We were able to hit 12 3 pointers.  Any win at this time of year is a good win".

Newell-Fonda (22-1) vs. CAM (17-6) next Wednesday and the game will be broadcast on Mix 101.7 KAYL
