January 22, 2021 11:05am

The Buena Vista County Sheriff's Office is asking for donations to assist them with re-starting their K-9 unit.

The last K-9 was used by the BV Sheriff's Office close to 20 years ago. They are looking to acquire a K-9 that would focus on narcotics and tracking. The BV Sheriff's Office believes that tracking would be a huge benefit that would make it easier to locate lost children or those with cognitive issues. They say narcotics detection is also something that their office needs.

Sheriff's Department Captain Marty DeMuth says they have a fundraising goal of 20-thousand dollars. Donations will be used to pay for the canine, training, vehicle equipment, leads, and more.

DeMuth says three-thousand dollars has been raised so far. A grant has been written for another three-thousand. DeMuth is hoping to have a canine in a patrol car by December of 2022. The program will be accelerated though if the money can be raised sooner.

Donations can be sent to...Buena Vista County Canine Unit...PO Box 276...Storm Lake, Iowa 50588.
