A Lake City man faces up to ten years in prison after pleading guilty to illegal possession of a gun.

52-year-old Jeffrey Carothers was convicted of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Carothers was previously convicted in California of receiving stolen property, which prohibited him from possessing guns.

At a plea hearing, Carothers admitted that around April or May of 2019, he possessed a nine milometer pistol. He also admitted that he was an illegal user of methamphetamine, and that over the past year or two, he traded methamphetamine and marijuana for guns approximately six times.

Sentencing will be set after a pre-sentence report is prepared. Along with the possible maximum sentence of ten years imprisonment, Carothers also faces a 250-thousand dollar fine, and up to three years of supervised release.
