Alta Aurelia at SLSM Basketball Recap

Tuesday night's double-header rematch at the Panther Pit began with the St. Mary's girls holding off Alta Aurelia for a 41-37 win. 

Alta Aurelia went up 10-5, but the Panthers followed with a 12-0 run that extended into the 2nd quarter.  St. Mary's led by as many as nine in the 1st half, and led 23-16 at halftime. 

A 10-2 run sparked the Warriors to regain the lead at 26-25 in the 3rd, but after a free throw tied the game, St. Mary's took the lead back for good with consecutive threes by Emily Nothwehr and Natalie Green.  The Panthers led by nine going to the 4th. 

St. Mary's led by seven midway through the 4th, but the Warriors scored four straight, capped off by two free throws by Brielle Engelmann to make it 40-37.  After a missed St. Mary's free throw with 33.6 seconds left, Alta Aurelia got the rebound, and the ball wound up out of bounds in the front court.  The Warriors retained possession and called timeout with 11.2 left.  A three attempt fell short in the final seconds, and then Sydney Hurd made a free throw with 2.9 seconds left for the final margin. 

Hurd scored 17, and Nothwehr had 12.  Shea Peterson had 16 for the Warriors, and Engelmann had 10. 

St. Mary's sixth win in a row puts them at 8-2, dropping Alta Aurelia to 1-11.  An interview with St. Mary's coach Derek Varner can be heard below. 

 

The Alta Aurelia boys picked up a 68-28 win over St. Mary's. 

The Panthers only lead was 4-2.  Alta Aurelia led 11-10 after one quarter.  The game was tied at 15-15, and the Warriors from there ended the half on a 15-0 run and never looked back. 

Cade Rohwer led the way for the Warriors with 25, and Trey Englemann added 17.  John Heitman had 9 points on three from downtown for St. Mary's. 

Alta Aurelia is now 8-2, and St. Mary's is 1-9.
