October 14, 2020 11:18am

A Storm Lake man was arrested after he was found to be in possession of a gun on the Buena Vista University campus.

Storm Lake Police Officers responded to a report of a suspicious person on the Buena Vista University campus shortly before 9:30 last (Tues) evening. Officers met with Campus Security and were advised that a Security Officer had encountered a male wearing a backpack that was armed with what appeared to be a BB or pellet gun inside Edson Hall. When confronted by Campus Security, the suspect fled southbound on foot. A shelter in place order was issued campus wide as a precautionary measure.

A short time later, a police officer observed the suspect walking in Sunset Park. When officers attempted to approach the individual, he fled down the high bank towards the lakefront. A police department K-9 and a drone from the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Department were used to assist in the search.

Shortly after 10:30pm, officers located and arrested 19-year-old Ryan Haynes of Storm Lake. Haynes was charged with interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor. He was transported to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center where he was treated for minor injuries, sustained from falling onto rocks after jumping off the high bank into Storm Lake. Officers recovered a pellet gun and a container of prescription pills at the scene.

Haynes was treated and released at the Medical Center and was transported to the Buena Vista County Jail, where he was booked and held on a three-hundred dollar bond.

Haynes is not a student at Buena Vista University and was believed to be merely walking through the area.

The Storm Lake Police Department was assisted at the scene by Buena Vista University Campus Security, the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Department, the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center, and the Storm Lake Police Department K-9 Unit.

The Shelter in place order issued for BVU was lifted just after 11pm Tuesday.
