Health Strategies in Place for Storm Lake Schools

August 10, 2020 9:09am

The Storm Lake Community School District is implementing health and safety mitigation strategies as they gear up for the start of the school year.

Superintendent Dr. Stacey Cole says the district's goal is to not only re-open, but to stay open through the school year.

"First, we're going to ask that you stay home if you are sick.  If you have a new cough, if you have shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, or a new loss of taste or smell, we're going to ask that you stay home and seek medical evaluation.  If you have any two of these conditions...fever, headache, muscle and body aches, fatigue, sore throat, runny nose, congestion, vomiting, or diarrhea...we're also going to ask that you stay home and seek medical evaluation."

Dr. Cole is asking students and staff to practice social distancing both in and out of school.

"Social distancing is the center focal point of our cohort model.  We believe that is the main piece of our plan that will allow us to stay open through the year.  In classrooms, there will be social distancing, but we're also going to ask that you social distance outside of the classrooms as much as possible."

Dr. Cole says frequent cleaning schedules will be in place. Additional cleaning supplies are being added to all classrooms, and additional custodians are being hired. Masks are being required when social distancing can't be maintained.

Classes are set to begin at Storm Lake Community Schools on August 26th.
