IHSAA makes revised plan for upcoming football season

July 24, 2020 2:40pm

The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) has given some clarity to how the fall football season will look. The plan laid out mid-day Friday has the first practice happening August 10th while the championships will be happening November 20-21. Schools have until August 17th to state their intention of weather or not to participate in the regular season or postseason.

The schedule will look quite different this year as the regular season will have seven games instead of the usual nine. However, the first two weeks are optional, and teams will not be penalized if they do not have games the first two weeks. If teams do miss games to COVID-19 the game will be considered a “no contest” and not be made up.

After the seven regular season weeks wrap up every team will make the playoffs. The teams will enter a six-round playoff for all levels (8 man through 4A) and play in a 64-team bracket form. The postseason pairings will be decided with geography, quality, and team availability as primary considerations.
