July 20, 2020 11:39pm

The Ridge View Raptors upset the #8 West Lyon Wildcats 5-0, to win Class 2A Region 3 and advance to state.

The first three innings of the contest flew by as it appeared the teams would be in for a pitchers duel. Through three the only baserunners on either side were two base hits for Ridge View and a hit by pitch for West Lyon.

The Raptors struck first in the fourth, as Katie Pickhinke lead off with a walk followed up by an Emma Vohs single up the middle. After Addison Schmidt hit into a fielder's choice, Autumn Henkel picked up the games first run batted in as her single scored Vohs. Kennedy Kramer would get the next two Raptors to retire the side.

The Raptors would explode for four runs in the fifth, with back to back home runs. The inning would start with a groundout, followed by back to back singles by Shae Dutler and Mikayla Kolpin. After Pickhinke grounded into a fielder's choice the fireworks started for the Raptors. Vohs would hammer a 2-1 pitch over the left-field fence to make it 4-0. Then Schmidt would follow suit on a 1-1 pitch to straightaway center to make it 5-0. Kennedy would get a fly out to get out of the inning.

The sixth and seventh saw the Wildcats get runners on base, but Schmidt would keep them at bay. The Wildcats would get a runner to second but no further in the final two innings.

The Raptors would end up with nine hits, while the Wildcats would only muster one hit. Final numbers for Schmidt: she picks up win 10 on the season, gave up just two hits, a walk, and a hit batter while striking out two.

With the win, the Raptors advance to the Class 2A state tournament for the first time since 2013. They will be taking on #1 North Linn next Tuesday, July 28 at 11:00 am in Fort Dodge.
