Newell Fonda Routes Exira-EHK ; Makes Another State Tournament

The 2nd-ranked Newell Fonda softball team jumped on #9 Exira-EHK early and rolled to a 10-0 five-inning win in a 1A region final in Fonda on Monday.  

The Mustangs sent ten batters to the plate in a six-run 1st inning, in which they had six of their eight hits on the night.  Ella Larsen, Anna Bellcock, and Sophie Stewart all had RBI hits as part of the 1st inning onslaught. 

Newell Fonda scored two runs in the 3rd, including an RBI sac fly by Megan Morenz.  They added a run in the 4th on a Mia Walker RBI groundout, and Bailey Sievers scored the game-winner in the 5th on a wild pitch. 

The Newell Fonda defense played errorless, while the Spartans committed six errors. 

Winning pitcher Kierra Jungers only allowed two baserunners, threw a one-hitter, and struck out eight, as the Mustangs handed Exira-EHK their first loss of the year, ending their season at 15-1. 

Newell Fonda (18-2) will make their 12th state tournament visit next week.  They are the #2 seed.  Their quarterfinal game in Fort Dodge will be played on Tuesday, July 28th at 7pm against 7th-seed Lisbon.
