Mustang Baseball Hangs on to Win District Final

The Newell Fonda baseball team defeated Alta Aurelia 7-5 in a 1A district final Saturday night in Alta. 

Alta Aurelia broke through in the bottom of the 1st.  Michael Ryhert led off with a double, and then scored on an RBI single by Logan McCoy.   

The Mustangs tied the game in the 2nd, as Mason Dicks led off with a double, and eventually scored on a wild pitch.  Newell Fonda went ahead in the 3rd with two runs, including an RBI double by Hogan Henrich.  

The Warriors answered with three in their half of the 3rd, which featured a two-RBI single by Trey Engelmann, to take a 4-3 lead.  

Newell Fonda took the lead for good with two runs in the 5th, as Dicks drew a bases loaded walk, and Ryan Greenfield singled home a run.  The Mustangs padded the lead in the 7th on a two-RBI single by Jake DeMay. 

Alta Aurelia scored one in the bottom of the 7th on an RBI single by Ryan Jensen, but Tanner Gerke got a popout with the bases loaded to end the game.  

Newell Fonda had nine hits in the game, and Alta Aurelia had six.  Henrich pitched four innings to get the win, and Gerke went the rest of the way.  

Alta Aurelia finishes at 13-5.  Their two seniors are Logan McCoy and Michael Ryherd.  

Newell Fonda's second district title in a row puts them at 16-2.  The Mustangs play Remsen St. Mary's in a substate final on Tuesday at 7pm at LeMars Gehlen, which will be broadcast on 92.9FM KKIA.
