Tornadoes Oust Crusaders In District Opener

July 17, 2020 10:37pm

Mark Eddie threw a five hit shutout and Tyler Dvergsten delivered a two-run single in the top of the first inning and the Storm Lake baseball team beat 7th ranked Bishop-Heelan 2-0 Friday night in Sioux City.

Eddie was dominant from the start as he struck out eight and walked one while throwing 110 pitches. Losing pitcher Ben Dixon entered the game with a 5-0 record and had not allowed an earned run in 23 innings but Mark Eddie led off the game with a double and Jailen Hansen followed with a ground ball to the shortstop who tried to throw out Eddie advancing to third base but Eddie slid in under the tag and the Tornadoes had runners at first and third with no outs.  After Dixon got a strike out and a pop up for the 2nd out, Dvergsten blooped a single to short center scoring both Eddie and Hansen.

Dixon allowed two runs on five hits, he struck out six and didn't walk anyone and threw 97 pitches.  The Crusaders finish the year with a record of 13-4.

Storm Lake, now 9-9, will play in a 3A District final at MOC-FV Monday night at 7pm.  The game will be broadcast on Mix 101.7FM KAYL.
