Spencer Ends Tornado Softball Season
July 17, 2020 6:09am
Emily English retired the first 13 batters of the game and the Spencer softball team had 13 hits in their 14-3 six inning win over Storm Lake in the first round of the class 4A regional softball tournament.
Tornado senior pitcher Skylar Cole was lifted after one-plus inning due to throwing illegal pitches, coach Mel Fisher said this after the game, "tonight was obviously not the outcome that we wanted. We played probably our worst game of the season tonight, the night it mattered most. The game started out rough with Skylar getting called for multiple illegal pitches eventually leading to her being taken out of the game without recording an out in the 2nd inning. The frustrating part of the whole situation is the umpire who kept calling it we had in 5-6 previous games this year and not once was an illegal pitch called. Skylar has pitched the same way for 5 years there was obviously something tonight he didn't like and we weren't going to be able to correct it".
Holly Dierenfield came in and pitched the final five innings. Storm Lake committed six errors which led to eight unearned runs.
In the bottom of the fifth inning Natalie Mahavong drilled a two-run double to left center field which was one of six hits for the Tornadoes over the last two innings of the game.
Storm Lake finishes the year 10-11. Spencer, now 6-9, will play at LeMars Saturday night.
