June 23, 2020 11:58pm

After four straight close losses to start the season the Storm Lake baseball team picked up a close win of their own on the road Tuesday night at Algona 4-3.

Jake Eddie's RBI single in the top of the 7th inning scored Ben Raveling who led off the inning with a double.  Mark Eddie then came in to pitch the bottom of the 7th inning and struck out the side to pick up the save.

Sam Dvergsten (1-2) notched the win as the sophmore threw 3 1/3 innings of relief giving up two runs on three hits.  Senior Cole Kleespies started the game and went 2 2/3 innings giving up just one run.

The Tornadoes had eight hits in the game with Jailen Hansen and Jake Eddie getting two a piece.  Hansen delivered a clutch two-out two run single in a three run 2nd inning and Austin Gaffney drove in the other run in that frame with an RBI double.

Storm Lake also played flawless defense committing no errors and made two great plays that saved at least three runs.  In the bottom of the 3rd the Bulldogs had the bases loaded with two outs when Mark Eddie drifted back into short left field and made a terrific catch to end the inning.  In the bottom of the 5th Algona had tied the game at 3-3 and had the go ahead run at second base when Tornado left fielder Kevin Lopez made a sliding catch to rob a base hit and keep the game tied.

Algona falls to 2-2 and will play Wednesday night at St. Ed's.  The Tornadoes are now 1-4 and will host E-L-C Wednesday night with the JV game starting at 5:15pm.
