Mustangs win regional final--will be top seed at 1A State Tournament

February 26, 2020 9:33pm

Balanced scoring and great defense propelled the Newell-Fonda girls basketball team to another lopsided win as they beat Woodbury Central 83-50 Wednesday night at Cherokee in a class 1A regional final.  The win wasn't an easy one at first for the Mustangs as Woodbury Central made some shots and trailed by only a 13-11 margin after the first eight minutes, but as it happens in so many Newell-Fonda games the points came in bunches and defense ignited most of them.  The Mustangs outscored the Wildcats 27-14 in the 2nd quarter to build a 40-25 lead at the break and that lead quickly turned into a 24 point advantage heading into the 4th quarter and the Mustangs would roll the rest of the way for their 24th win of the season.

Maddie Paulson led the Wildcats in scoring as she kept them in the game early netting 18 of her game high 27 points in the first half.  Woodbury Central finishes the year with an 18-6 record.

The Mustangs were balanced again offensively as Maggie Walker led the way with 21 points, Macy Sievers had 15, Ella Larsen 14, Megan Morenz had 13, and Bailey Sievers chipped in with 11.  Newell-Fonda drilled 12 3-pointers in the game.  It was their second win over Woodbury Central this season as they beat them January 4th by a score of 77-38.

Newell-Fonda will now try to make it back to back state championships when they open the 1A State Tournament against Council Bluffs-St. Albert next Wednesday at 1:30pm.  The game will be broadcast on 101.7FM KAYL.

Mustang coach Dick Jungers, in his 18th season as head coach, is taking his 11th team to state.  He has guided the Mustangs to state titles in 2015 and 2019 and his teams have finished 2nd in 2013, 2014, and 2018.  His record in 18 seasons is now 390-68.
