December 20, 2019 10:46pm

Jamuo Gatwech scored on a driving layup with :20 seconds left and the Storm Lake Tornadoes survived a last second shot by Spencer hanging on for a 55-54 win Friday night.

Storm Lake led 14-12 at the end of the first quarter and 24-21 at the break.  The green and white carried a 36-34 lead heading into the final stanza and quickly built their largest lead of the game at 44-37 with five minutes to play.  With Storm Lake leading 46-39, Spencer's Karter Petzenhauser took over the game for his team scoring 13 of their final 15 points in the last four minutes of the game.  After Gatwech put the Tornadoes up 55-53 Petzenhauser was fouled with nine seconds left, he made the first free throw but after a Storm Lake timeout he missed the second free throw, the rebound was tapped to the sideline where Storm Lake's Tyler Dvergsten grabbed the ball but his foot was on the sideline giving the ball back to Spencer with 6.5 seconds left.  After each team called a timeout the Tigers Gage Garnatz ended up missing a long three pointer at the buzzer and the Storm Lake celebration was on.

Dvergsten scored 11 of his team high 13 in the second half, Gatwech finished with 10, and Jesus Sots added nine.  Sophmore Luth Dak scored two points but had several blocks and rebounds.

Petzenhauser led all scorers with 26 as the Tigers fall to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference.  Storm lake is now 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the league.

The Storm Lake teams will play again January 3rd when they host E-L-C.
