Newell Fonda at Cherokee Basketball Recap

A girls basketball matchup of top-ten ranked teams turned out to be one-sided, as Newell Fonda routed Cherokee 84-40 on Thursday.  

The game began competitive with six lead changes, as Cherokee led 18-15 after the 1st quarter.  The Mustangs never trailed again after going up 19-18, and reeled off 35 points in the 2nd quarter to take a 50-29 at halftime, and got a running clock in motion late in the 3rd quarter.  

Newell Fonda had ten players score in the 1st half alone, and 11 for the game.  Macy Sievers had a game-high 21, and Maggie Walker had 14.  

JeMae Nichols had 18 for Cherokee, as the Braves were held to 36 points less than their state-leading average.  

Newell Fonda goes to 6-0, dropping Cherokee to 6-2.  

 

It was Cherokee that pulled away in the boys game with an 87-48 win.  

The Braves never trailed, hit 12 from downtown, and were led by Ryan Hurd with 22 points.  

Newell Fonda was led by Treyton Mahler with 15, and Trey Jungers had 10.  

Cherokee is now 4-2, and the Mustangs are 3-3.  

The Newell Fonda teams play at Manson Northwest Webster on Friday.
