Storm Lake boys win conference opener, Braves girls best Storm Lake

The Storm Lake basketball teams hosted Cherokee Friday night for the teams Lakes Conference opener.  The Braves girls started the night with an 88-43 win over the Tornadoes scoring 60 of their points in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

The Tornadoes were led by Skylar Cole's 20 points and Holly Dierenfield added eleven.  Alexis Pengel led four Braves in double figures with 22 points. Cherokee improves to 4-1 overall and Storm Lake drops to 0-5.

Storm Lake won the boys game 69-61 with Jamuo Gatwech leading the team with 16 points, Sam Slight came off the bench and scored 14, while Mark Eddie added 12.

Cherokee jumped out to a 20-8 lead after the first six minutes of the game but Storm lake battled back and the Tornadoes finished the 2nd quarter on a 13-2 run to grab a 34-30 lead at the half.

Storm Lake maintained that lead throughout the 3rd quarter and would build their largest lead at 60-51 with two minutes to play.  Cherokee would get it down to three at 62-59 after Ryan Hurd buried a 3-pointer with :49 seconds left to play.  In the final minute Eddie would go 4-for-4 at the foul line and Gatwech went 3-for-5 to seal the game.

Brayden Farver led Cherokee with 12 points, Hurd had 11 points and eleven rebounds, and Will Lugar added ten off the bench.

Cherokee falls to 1-2 overall, Storm Lake is now 2-2 and will play again next Tuesday at Spirit Lake.
