Alta Aurelia Advances to District Final

July 16, 2019 9:57pm

Alta Aurelia scored runs in five of seven innings against the team with the lowest E.R.A. in the state, as the Warriors beat MVAO-COU 8-5 Tuesday in a 2A baseball district semifinal in Hinton.

The Warriors broke through right away with two runs in the 1st inning.  Logan McCoy hit an RBI triple, and Aric Stephan drove in a run with a groundout.  Stephan led off the 4th with a homerun, and in the 5th they added another run when Conrad Falck scored on an error to make it 4-0.

MVAO-COU tied the game in the bottom of the 5th when they sent ten batters to the plate.  Haden Kuhl's RBI single with two outs made it a 4-4 game.  After that, Keaton Mork took over the pitching duties in place of Preston McCoy, and after issuing a walk, struck out the next batter to keep the game tied.

The Warriors shook that off in the 6th when a two-out, two-RBI double by Levi Sleezer put Alta Aurelia back on top.  After the Rams got one run back in their half of the 6th, Logan McCoy and Stephan started the 7th when back to back doubles to produce a run, and Cade Rohwer singled home another two outs later.

Preston McCoy got the win, throwing 4 and 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits, one walk, and six strikeouts.  Mork pitched the rest of the way, allowing one hit, two walks, and struck out four.

Alta Aurelia (17-9) had nine hits, and the Rams had eight.  MVAO-COU ends at 19-4.

The Warriors will return to Hinton Saturday night and play in a district final at 7pm against top-seed Hinton, which will be broadcast along Storm Lake Radio.  Hinton shutout Missouri Valley in the semifinals 10-0.
