SLHS Woodshop Building On Hold

December 18, 2015

Plans to build a new wood shop at the Storm Lake High School are on hold, pending the completion of a facility review.

The school has been using the woodworking shop at Iowa Central’s Storm Lake facility. The high school has used the shop during the day under an agreement developed in 1993… but earlier this year, Iowa Central terminated the agreement… as they need to use the shop three hours a day for a new training program for local industries.

Superintendent Carl Turner says DLR Architects completed an initial study of building a 50-by-150 foot building between the high school and the football stadium for the wood shop and a visitors locker room for football. However, the preliminary cost was a lot higher than anticipated.

This year, the school is using Iowa Central’s wood shop reduced hours, which has led to large classes and some students haven’t been able to take classes because they’re full. The school board will discuss the building proposal again in January.
