Two men have been arrested after the Storm Lake Police Department took a report of a burglary to a vehicle in the 600 block of Superior Street at around 9:20 Wednesday morning.
Police were advised by the reporting party that on Tuesday between the hours of 5pm and 10pm, an unknown person or persons entered their vehicle and stole debit cards, an Iowa driver’s license, and loose change. Police further learned that following that burglary, the victim’s debit card was used at the Storm Lake Arbys and La Juanita’s.
Police conducted an investigation reviewing security video at the two stores and interviewing some employees. Police observed a suspect on the security video, and on Wednesday evening, went to his residence at 601B West 9th Street in an attempt to locate him. As police approached the apartment door, they allegedly detected the odor of marijuana coming from the door. Officers backed away and made an application for a search warrant for the residence.
At 10:50pm, police observed two adult males exit the West 9th Street address. Police took them into custody, and identified them as 23-year-old Kyle Thelen, and 18-year-old Alan Martinez, both of Storm Lake. Police allege that upon taking Martinez into custody, they located stolen items from the vehicle burglary in his possession.
Police executed the search warrant at 601B West 9th Street at 11:40pm, where they reportedly located and seized marijuana, drug paraphernalia, stolen property from the Superior Street vehicle burglary, and other items believed to be stolen from other vehicles.
At approximately 2am Thursday, Storm Lake Police conducted a consent search at a second residence at 612 East 5th Street, where they allegedly located and seized additional stolen property from the reported burglary, and items that are believed to be stolen from unreported vehicle burglaries.
Thelen was charged with Possession of Marijuana, and Gathering Where Controlled Substances Are Used, both serious misdemeanors…and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. He was booked into the Buena Vista County Jail on a 23-hundred dollar bond.

Storm Lake Police advise that some of the property recovered is believed to have been stolen from parked motor vehicles between the 600 block of East 5th Street, and the 600 block of West 9th Street.
The Storm Lake Police Department is asking that if anyone is missing items from their vehicles to contact the Storm Lake Police Department. Additional charges are anticipated in the investigation.
