Spencer ousts Storm Lake from 4A regional

The Spencer girls basketball team beat Storm Lake 64-48 Wednesday night in a class 4A regional opener that was played at Spencer.

The Tigers built a 16-1 lead when Storm Lake coach Sam Lipps called a time-out with 2:10 left in the first quarter.  The Tornadoes responded going on a 9-2 run to finish the quarter trailing 18-10 and would then score the first seven points of the 2nd quarter to pull within 18-17 with 5:10 left in the first half, but the Tigers finished the 2nd quarter on a 17-2 run to make it 35-19 at the break.

Spencer's lead was never less than eleven in the 2nd half as they picked up their third win over Storm Lake this year.  The Tigers connected on 9 of 26 shots from the arc with Alexa Johnson and Jada Piercy making four each.  Johnson finished with a team high 16 points, Piercy had 14, and Allison Piercy chipped in with 13.

The Tornadoes shot the ball well making 19 of 36 shots but hurt themselves by committing 30 turnovers.

Storm Lake was led by Mary Yanga's game high 19, the junior made four 3-pointers on the night.  Skylar Cole was also in double figures with 14.

Storm Lake concludes their season with a record of 2-17.  Spencer, now 7-15, will play at Mason City Saturday at 5pm in a regional semi-final game.
