Prairie Wolves edge Beavers in conference dual

January 23, 2020 7:57am

After dealing with Mother Nature for most of the last two weeks, the Buena Vista wrestling team was finally back on the mat Wednesday night at Nebraska Wesleyan, but the Beavers came up just short as the Prairie Wolves picked up a fall in the final bout of the night to squeak out a 23-19 American Rivers Conference victory.

Byron Fleming picked up a technical fall to begin the dual at 125 pounds as BVU jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead.  The Prairie Wolves then rolled off back-to-back wins to grab a 10-5 lead before senior Collin Stilson got the team back on track with an 18-7 major decision for his 18th win of the year.  BVU then found itself down 17-9 after two more wins by NWU before posting three straight wins, including a pair of narrow decisions, to go back in front 19-17.

It came down to the final match of the night, and the Prairie Wolves were the favorite going into the bout with Justin Hennessy, who placed eighth in the region a year ago, and he came through with a first period fall.

Both teams entered the night looking for their first conference win of the year and each had identical 3-3 overall marks.

Buena Vista is now 3-4 (0-3 A-R-C) and will prepare for the A-R-C Duals coming up this Saturday, January 25.  The Beavers head down to Pella, Iowa, where they will go up against No. 20 Central, No. 1 Wartburg and the University of Dubuque, respectively.  Action inside of P.H.
