July 24, 2019 7:27am

Top-ranked defending state champion Mason City Newman proved to be too much in their 9-2 win over Newell Fonda in a 1A baseball substate final Monday in Algona.

The Mustangs got on the board in the 1st inning after a leadoff single by Bryce Coppock, who would later score on a wild pitch.  Newman Catholic answered with a run in the bottom of the 1st, then four in the 2nd, including a two-run homer by Max Burt.  Newell Fonda scored a run in the 5th, as Michael Melohn led off with a double, and later scored on a throwing error.

The Knights also scored a run in the 5th, and then three more in the 6th, which included another homer by Burt.

RJ Rojas started, and went 5 1/3 for the Mustangs.  Rojas and Melohn are the two Newell Fonda seniors, as they finish at 17-15.  Mason City Newman returns to the state tournament with a record of 35-3.
