Newell Fonda Holds On In State 1st Rounder

Newell Fonda defeated Lynnville Sully 7-5 on Monday in a 1A state softball quarterfinal in Fort Dodge.  

The Mustangs jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings, thanks to a run in the 1st, and four more in the 3rd.  Lynnville Sully responded with four runs in the 4th, all scoring with two outs, to close to within 5-4.  

In the bottom of the 5th, Kylie Robinson delivered the Wells Ag Supply of Fonda Play of the Game, a two-out, two-RBI single that padded the Newell Fonda lead to 7-4.  The Hawks scored a run in the 7th for the final margin.

Ella Larsen picked up her 20th win of the season, allowing five runs, all earned, nine hits, three walks, and struck out seven.    

Newell Fonda had 11 hits.  Every Mustangs batter had at least one.  Emma Stewart, Megan Morenz, and Anna Bellcock each had an RBI, as 4th-seeded Newell Fonda is now 38-5, dropping Lynnville Sully to 26-9.  The Mustangs stretch their winning streak to 19 games.  

The Mustangs play top-seed, and defending champions Collins Maxwell in the semifinals at 11am Wednesday.  The game will be broadcast on 92.9FM KKIA.  Collins Maxwell defeated Newell Fonda in the state quarterfinals last year 4-0.
