Bulldogs end Tornadoes season

LeMars never trailed and beat Storm Lake 7-1 in the opening round of the class 4A regional tournament.  The Bulldogs plated a run in the first and added two more in the 3rd to grab a 3-0 lead.  In the bottom of the 6th and the score still 3-0, Rowan Kolpin hit a one-out triple and Rachel Bozonie followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.  LeMars would add four more runs in the top of the 7th to make it 7-1.

In the bottom of the inning Riley Youngstedt and Jessica Slight got things going with back to back singles but winning pitcher Brook Berkenpas retired the next three batters to end the game.  Berkenpas gave up one run on six hits, she struck out eight and walked two.

Losing pitcher Skylar Cole allowed seven runs, not all earned, on seven hits, she struck out six, walked three and hit two batters.

Coach Mel Fisher said this,

"Tonight's game and outcome was reflective of our whole season, We just couldn't make the plays when we needed to, offensively or defensively. We had opportunities offensively and couldn't get it done, stranding 7 runners on base. Defensively we were flat and allowed runs to score without base hits happening. Mental and physical errors hurt us. We beat ourselves more than our opponents beat us".

Storm Lake concludes the year with a record of 15-19.  For LeMars it was their ninth straight win, now 21-12, and they will play again Saturday against Bishop Heelan.
