Spirit Lake baseball edges Tornadoes

Ben Newman's RBI sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 5th inning proved to be the winning run as Spirit Lake beat Storm Lake 5-4 in a baseball game played at Spirit Lake Friday night.  Storm Lake led 3-1 after plating three unearned runs in the top of the 2nd inning when Fletcher Kucera drilled a two-run double and Manny Chavez followed with an RBI single.  The Indians scored one in the 2nd and two more in the 3rd and led 4-3 after three innings.

Kucera led off the 4th with a single and later came around to score on a base hit by Drew Price.  Spirit Lake's Jake Cornwall led off the bottom of the 5th reaching on an error and would later score when Newman hit a fly ball to left field.  In the top of the sixth Ethan James hit a two-out single but was later thrown out by Max Carney trying to steal 2nd base.  In the top of the seventh inning, Price led off with a single, Ben Raveling would strike out and when Mark Eddie struck out Carney gunned out Price trying to steal second base for a game ending double play.

Price led a nine hit attack for the Tornadoes going 3-for-3 with a walk.  Price suffered the loss giving up four earned runs in 2 1/3 innings pitched.  Kucera tossed the final 3 2/3 giving an unearned run on two hits.  

Storm Lake falls to 15-7 overall and 7-4 in the Lakes Conference, they will play at home Monday night when they host Emmetsburg.  With the win Spirit Lake is 7-13 and 5-6 in the Lakes Conference.

The J-V game was won by Spirit Lake 7-3.
