The Storm Lake boys soccer teams season ended Friday with a 3-2 (4-2, PK) loss to Lewis Central in the opening round of the class 2A state tournament in Des Moines.  Lewis Central tied the match 2-2 with 10:56 left in regulation when they scored off of a free kick and after a pair of scoreless overtime sessions the Titans came out on top.

Jose Martinez scored his 32nd and 33rd goals of the season the first with 2:40 left in the first half and Storm Lake led 1-0 at halftime.  Paul Devine would score on a penalty kick to tie the match with 30:30 left in the 2nd half but 19 seconds later Martinez would find the back of the net on a beautiful set up by Andy Rodriguez and the Tornadoes took the lead back at 2-1.  Less than a minute later Martinez was the center of attention again as he lined up for a penalty kick, the kick went off the goal post and bounced right back to Martinez who then booted the ball into the back of the net for a 3-1 lead.  The goal was taken off the board however as the officials determined Martinez was the first person to touch the ball after his penalty kick and the score remained 2-1.

Each team would score on their first two shot attempts in the penalty kick situation with Brian Munuz and Erick Romo beating the goalkeeper Cole Jensen.  But Jensen would stop the next two shot attempts while the Titans connected on all four of their penalty kick attempts.

The Tornadoes graduate eight seniors from a team that finished 16-2.  The goals by Martinez added to his school career record with 92.

Lewis Central, 18-3, will now play Hudson United in the semi-final round.  Top seeded Cedar Rapids-Xavier and Gilbert also advanced to the 2A semi-final round.
