Woman Receives Life-Threatening Injuries After Being Struck by a Vehicle While Riding a Bike

A Spencer woman received serious injuries after she was struck by a vehicle while riding a bicycle.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened shortly after 7pm last Thursday in the 23 hundred mile of 340th Street in rural Spencer. Ruby Alsman was riding a bicycle westbound on 340th Street. 22-year-old Carissa Gittins of Laurens was driving a 2021 Nissan Rogue westbound as well. Due to the glare of the sun, Gittins was unable to see Alsman on the bicycle, and the vehicle struck the bike as a result.

Alsman was transported to the Spencer Hospital, and was later airlifted to Sioux Falls with life-threatening injuries. The incident remains under investigation.
