Victims Identified in Battle Creek Home Explosion

The names of the three individuals that were injured in a home explosion in Battle Creek have been released.

According to the Ida County Sheriff’s Office, the three individuals are identified as 42-year-old Jeremy Bruning, 46-year-old Joel Stapleton, and 68-year-old Sandra Jepsen.

The explosion happened around 9:30 Wednesday morning at 2362 Carriage Avenue in Battle Creek. The house was completely engulfed in flames upon the arrival of first responders. The three victims had been inside the home at the time of the explosion. They were assisted outside of the house by another person who was present, but wasn’t inside the house when the explosion occurred.

Bruning and Jepsen were transported to Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove. Shortly after that, they were flown to the burn center in Lincoln, Nebraska. Stapleton was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

The State Fire Marshal’s investigation into the cause of the explosion is still ongoing.

18 agencies assisted the Ida County Sheriff’s Office at the scene including the Battle Creek and Ida Grove Ambulance Services, Battle Creek and Ida Grove Fire Departments, Holstein Ambulance, Ida County Emergency Management, and Ida County Emergency Services.
