Both drivers were injured in a head-on SUV vs semi collision over the weekend in Buena Vista County.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident happened shortly before 5:55am Saturday at the 188 mile marker on Highway 71. 19-year-old Joseph Dak of Storm Lake was driving the SUV northbound on Highway 71, while 27-year-old Hunter Coatney of Pierre City, Missouri was driving the semi tractor-trailer south on the highway. Dak crossed the centerline and into the path of the semi which resulted in a collision. Coatney was wearing his seat belt, while Dak was not wearing a seat belt.
Dak was transported by the BVRMC Ambulance to the Spencer Hospital. Coatney was transported by Sioux Rapids Fire and Rescue to BVRMC. The Iowa State Patrol was assisted by the Buena Vista and Clay County Sheriff’s Departments.
