Trees Planted in Storm Lake Through Million Trees Initiative

Several trees were planted in a couple of Storm Lake parks on Wednesday.

Five trees were planted at the West 10th Street Park across from the Field of Dreams. A total of 14 Storm Lake St. Mary’s High School and Storm Lake High School I-JAG student volunteers helped with the process, along with a couple of other local volunteers.

Jeff Jensen, northwest Iowa field coordinator with the non-profit Trees Forever, was on hand to oversee the effort…

Four trees were planted at Frank Starr Park, and 11 more will be planted at various locations in the community.

Earlier this year, Storm Lake was selected to receive a four-thousand dollar grant from the Alliant Energy Community Tree Program, which is part of the “One Million Trees” initiative. The City of Storm Lake pursued the grant to help offset some tree losses due to Emerald Ash Borer and storm damage on public properties.

The Alliant Energy program aims to fund the planting of a million trees in Iowa and Wisconsin by the end of the year 2030. So far, over 458-thousand trees have been planted through the program.
