Teen Charged With Setting Fire to a Shelter House in Pocahontas

A juvenile has been charged for allegedly causing a fire to a shelter house at a park in Pocahontas.

According to the Pocahontas Police Department, they received a report Monday evening that the west shelter house in Elbert Park was on fire. Upon arrival, authorities discovered the shelter house was fully engulfed in flames. The department continued the investigation after they reportedly found some suspicious indicators at the scene.

Further investigation determined that a 16-year-old male allegedly entered the shelter house and lit a fire under the surveillance system. The video led to a search warrant being obtained and executed. The 16-year-old was located and charged with 1st Degree Criminal Mischief and 2nd Degree Arson, both class C felonies…and Possession of Marijuana, a serious misdemeanor. The juvenile was sent to the Youth Emergency Services Detention Center in Cherokee.
