Suspect Vehicle Crashes into Patrol Cars During Response to Deadly Crash in Laurens

A driver reportedly hit two patrol cars and fled the scene while officers were assisting with a deadly crash late last week in Pocahontas County.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, troopers were responding to an unrelated single-vehicle deadly crash shortly after 7:30pm Friday near the intersection of East and Allen Streets in Laurens when a vehicle hit both an Iowa State Patrol vehicle and a Laurens Police Department vehicle before attempting to flee. The suspect was located by Pocahontas Police on Highway 10 and stop sticks were successfully deployed. The ISP says the driver revved the engine until the vehicle caught on fire. The suspect allegedly attempted to flee on foot before being taken into custody.

The suspect has been identified as 35-year-old Ricky Burnett of Spencer. He faces multiple charges including Leaving The Scene of a Personal Injury Accident, 2nd Offense Eluding, Reckless Driving, Driving While Suspended, and No Proof of Insurance. The Laurens and Pocahontas Police Departments, Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Office, and Laurens and Hacklock Fire Departments all responded to the incident.
