Suspect Shot to Death After Hours-Long Standoff in Storm Lake; Suspect Fired Several Shots

More information has been released regarding a vehicle pursuit on Sunday that resulted in standoff in which several shots were fired, and the suspect was ultimately shot to death.

According to information released by the Iowa Department of Public Safety, the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office stopped a pickup truck for speeding outside of Storm Lake at approximately 8am Sunday. The driver, 45-year-old Daniel Palenik, was uncooperative, made threats toward law enforcement, and fled at a high rate of speed. Law enforcement located Palenik at his Storm Lake residence a short time later. Palenik subsequently barricaded himself inside his residence.

At approximately 10am, law enforcement evacuated residents in the area surrounding the 300 block of Oneida Street and set up a perimeter around the home. At approximately 4pm, Palenik fired several rounds at law enforcement. Palenik fired dozens of rounds at officers throughout the afternoon and evening, striking both occupied vehicles and law enforcement equipment.

Shortly before 3am this (Mon) morning, Palenik again fired at law enforcement. Officers returned fire, and Palenik was struck and died at the scene.

The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave consistent with departmental policy. The investigation is ongoing.

The incident involved more than a dozen law enforcement agencies including the Storm Lake Police Department, Storm Lake Fire Department, BV County Sheriff’s Office, and Sac County Sheriff’s Office.
