Storm Lake School Board Will Soon Decide on Purchase of Iowa Central Community College Building

The Storm Lake School Board at their regular monthly meeting in August will vote on whether to purchase the Iowa Central Community College building, which is located on the Storm Lake High School campus.

The Iowa Department of Education has authorized the use of federal ESSER funds to purchase the building. The project meets ESSER criteria since it is part of the Storm Lake district’s COVID Return to Learn plan. The district may leverage federal ESSER funds to use the Iowa Central building for space if there are future virus outbreaks. The space is also available if there happen to be overflowing high school classrooms.

The Iowa Central Community College Building is priced at 600-thousand dollars. There would NOT be a property tax increase if the school board approves the purchase. The district would cover the costs of the building’s heating, cooling, and custodial support. Iowa Central would be allowed to use the space rent free, as determined by the district, until a new Iowa Central Learning Center is built.

The Storm Lake School Board will vote on the purchase at their meeting on August 17th.
