Storm Lake School Board Narrows Down Legislative Priorities ; Superintendent Talks District’s Teacher Status

The Storm Lake School Board on Wednesday identified its four state legislation action priorities to be submitted to the Iowa Association of School Boards and Rural School Advocates of Iowa.

The next-highest priority on Cole’s list is English learners…

The board agreed to submit preschool and English learners, as well as school safety and mental health. Cole said she feels mental health is a school safety method, and urged that at least one of those be sent as a district priority.

Cole also listed teacher recruitment and supplemental state aid as possible priorities to submit. She feels there is going to be a discussion in the near future regarding supplemental state aid regardless if the district submitted it as a priority. Board President Dave Skibsted said Storm Lake’s legislative priorities are often similar to the ones that are submitted by other districts. He especially pushed for school safety to be on Storm Lake’s list this year.
