The Storm Lake School Board approved an updated high school cell phone policy on Wednesday.
High School Principal Matt Doebel said it’s been a big undertaking. He said they talked with officials from other schools considering implementing a cell phone policy and modeled it after one that’s being used in a school in New York…
Beginning this coming school year, cell phones at the high school will be prohibited in classrooms as well as the media center, science labs, restrooms, all physical education areas, and all school office areas. A violation will result in the device being confiscated until the end of that school day, and future offenses will result in a conference with parents, and possible suspension. Cell phones cannot be used to disrupt the education environment or violate the rights of others, among other things.
Board member Steven Mills said he’s happy to see the policy in place…
Doebel called the policy a “starting point.” He said data will be collected during the upcoming school year to possibly tweak the policy going forward.
