The Storm Lake Police Department has turned a vehicle previously used in drug trafficking into a new “YumVee.”
A drug investigation two years ago that began with a traffic stop has led to the forfeiture and seizure of a 2005 Hummer H2, which has been converted into the “YumVee H2.” The new “YumVee” replaces the 1992 military surplus HumVee that had been used for that purpose in recent years. The military vehicle will be kept as a utility vehicle by the police department.
The “YumVee H2” will be used primarily for the Storm Lake Police Department’s Community Engagement and Crime Prevention Strategy, which focuses on forging connections with members of the community. The vehicle is equipped with a mobile freezer for ice cream treats. The “YumVee” program has been especially effective in building relationships with Storm Lake children.
The new “YumVee” will be making appearances later today (Tues) at the National Night Out block parties.
