Storm Lake Hydrant Flushing Gets Started Next Week

The City of Storm Lake’s annual hydrant flushing and servicing program will be getting started soon.

The City’s water distribution crew will begin flushing hydrants next Monday, April 10th. Flushing will begin at the water plant, working west to east across the City, following the path of the distribution system, and finish up at the West Lakes Estates area. Flushing ensures that hydrants are working properly, and also removes any rust or sediment that could limit water flow.

Flushing will happen several days per week, depending on crew availability and other needs. All of Storm Lake’s approximately 500 hydrants will be flushed over a two to three month span. Flushing will occur daily between the hours of 6am and 3:30pm, with the exception of the downtown area, as those hydrants will be flushed in the early morning hours.

During the flushing process, the City of Storm Lake recommends that customers check their water supply in the morning from the cold water supply closest to their water meter. If residents notice discoloration or odor, they should run their household system for five to seven minutes from the cold water faucet nearest to the water meter. Residents can contact the City of Storm Lake at 732-8020 if discoloration or odor continues.
