Storm Lake High School Students Walkout Today in Protest of LGBTQ-Related Bills

Dozens of Storm Lake High School students participated in a walkout demonstration this (Wed) afternoon in protest of several bills in the Iowa Legislature that they feel unfairly target L-G-B-T-Q youth.

Several Storm Lake High School students shared a personal story at the walkout. Evan Anderson, who is transgender, transferred to the Storm Lake district at the beginning of this school year, and said he was abused physically and verbally at his previous school…(audio clip below :15 )

Another speaker was a girl who goes by the name “Atticus”…(audio clip below :17 )

Sophomore Andrea Ornelas said she has friends and family that are part of the gay and L-G-B-T-Q community…(audio clip below :17 )

After the demonstration, Dierking said she played a role in organizing the walkout, along with the student council and the school’s Genders and Sexualities Alliances club…(audio clip below :28 )

Protests were held at a dozen other Iowa schools today (Wed) as well.
