Storm Lake Fire Department Starting Junior Firefighters Program

The Storm Lake Fire Department is launching a new Junior Firefighter Program.

The program will allow young people to learn about local fire and emergency services with hands-on experience. Area individuals ages 14 to 19 may apply. Members of the Junior Firefighter Program will participate in training and activities. The Juniors will be able to respond to calls alongside the fire department to observe and learn, but will not participate in live firefighting emergencies.

Storm Lake Fire Chief Glenn Schlesser says the program will be an excellent way to engage younger members of the community, and will provide an opportunity to develop life skills including leadership, self-confidence, teamwork, and volunteer service.

A news release states that Junior Firefighter Programs have a proven track record of success in several communities around the state and nation. Many current fire chiefs and fire department officers began their careers as cadets in a Junior Program.

The Storm Lake Fire Department is hoping to have up to eight cadets in the initial class to begin training in January. Applications are available at the fire station, or on the City of Storm Lake’s website. Parental permission is required.
