Storm Lake Fire Department Fills New Fire Inspector Position

The new position of Fire Inspector for the Storm Lake Fire Department has been filled with the hiring of experienced firefighter Blake Severson.

Severson began his service with the SLFD this week.

A fire inspector plays an important role in protecting life and property from the risk of catastrophic fires. The position involves the detecting of fire hazards, enforcing compliance with state and local fire codes, and recommending prevention measures. A fire inspector can also identify building layouts and potential firefighting challenges within a specific structure, which can assist firefighters with a safe and efficient response in the event of a fire call.

Severson brings over 15 years of fire service experience with the Northwood, Iowa Fire and EMS departments, including the last three years as chief of both services. He follows his grandfather, father and uncles into the fire service career.

Fire Inspector Severson comes to his position with qualifications including Certified Firefighter, Advanced EMT and several specialty certifications and trainings.

“Fire prevention is one of the single most important areas we should focus our time on in the fire service,” Severson said of the new position. “From fire inspections to community outreach, if we are able to prevent one fire, one loss of life, we have successfully done our job and changed the lives of others.”

Severson said he is excited for the opportunity to serve the Storm Lake community and continue to grow the fire prevention and inspection programs here. “It is great to see proactive thinking and strong leadership within the city and department,” he said. “I look forward to meeting the public, not to mention my family and I are eager to make the move and become active members of the community.”
