Storm Lake City Council Puts Domestic Pigeon Regulation Changes on Hold

The Storm Lake City Council on Monday opted to pause the process of a proposed amendment on the regulation of domestic pigeons.

The first reading of the proposed changes was approved at the previous council meeting, but the council this week decided to give the matter further consideration before proceeding further. Several local individuals and families who take part in the hobby of raising and racing homing pigeons attended the meeting this week. A member of one family named Blanca took issue with language in the proposed policy change that would allow no more than ten pigeons to be kept on a property…

She said they have 80 pigeons on their property, which she said would be an acceptable number to be allowed. Council member Meg McKeon said she would be willing to make that adjustment…

Complaints have been made about that family’s pigeons flying around the property of neighbors.

The council did not take action on the second reading of the ordinance change. Mayor Mike Porsch said they will go back to the drawing board, and there could possibly be another work session.
