Storm Lake City Council Narrowly Passes Final Reading of Domestic Pigeons Ordinance Revision

The Storm Lake City Council Monday on a 3-2 vote passed the 3rd and final reading of an ordinance revision regarding regulation of domestic pigeons within the city.

The ordinance states that the maximum number of domestic pigeons kept on a property shall not exceed one hundred. Council member Kevin McKinney still opposes that many pigeons per property and questioned how it will be enforced.

City Building Official Scott Olesen responded…

City Manager Keri Navratil said they’re planning a licensing process similar to the one they have for cats and dogs.

Council member Matt Ricklefs also voted against the 3rd reading, as he questioned if allowing up to a hundred pigeons per property is too many.

Council member Meg McKeon cited previous information provided to the city, and argued that those who have invested in the hobby of raising and racing pigeons would not be able to continue if a hundred maximum wasn’t permitted.
