Storm Lake City Council by 3-2 Vote Approves Increased Funding for Participation in a Community Betterment Program

The Storm Lake City Council Monday on a 3-2 vote approved updating the city’s participating cost in a Hometown Pride regional program.

Hometown Pride is designed to create and improve local facilities, spaces, and events in a community. Last month, the council approved joining a group of eight other communities in the program, and capped the city’s contribution at ten thousand dollars annually. Since then, Spencer has had to withdraw from the group, at least temporarily, to focus on flood recovery, which changes Storm Lake’s annual contribution to approximately $12,375 per year for five years, assuming no other communities join.

Council member Maggie Martinez voted against the proposal…

City Communications Coordinator Dana Larsen responded…

Council members Meg McKeon, Maria Ramos, and Matt Ricklefs voted in favor of the funding increase, while Martinez and Kevin McKinney voted against it.

The group of towns involved also includes Alta, Aurelia, Newell, Lake Park, Lakeside, Royal, and Sioux Rapids. The cost of the program is determined on a per capita basis.
